REGISTRATION OF COURSES

1. In compliance with "Guidelines for Registering Courses" (kamoku toroku yoryo), a student enrolled in the Graduate School of American Studies is expected to sign up for courses on the date and time designated. A student in the second year and beyond should bring transcripts to registration.

2. Generally, students are not allowed to repeat courses that have already been taken with passing grades ("Pass" and 70-100).

3. Students are not allowed to take two courses offered at the same time. This is the rule at the Graduate School of American Studies and elsewhere on campus.

4. Students are expected to fill out OCR Registration Forms and submit them on the date and time designated. To fill these out they should refer to various materials such as "Student Guide to the Graduate School of American Studies" (rishu yoko), syllabi for courses, and teaching license courses (menkyo shikaku kankei rishu yoko), etc. Courses offered at other Doshisha University graduate schools are open to Graduate School of American Studies students only when they are indicated as such.

5. A student can withdraw from courses for approximately one month after classes begin without penalty of getting an F grade. Registration for courses, which is currently done about one week after classes begin, should be reviewed, so that all classes begin after registration is finished.

COURSES OF OTHER GRADUATE SCHOOLS IN DOSHISHA UNIVERSITY, COURSES TAKEN AT GRADUATE SCHOOLS IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES AND GRADUATE COURSES AT OTHER UNIVERSITIES

When the Graduate School of American Studies considers it necessary, a student enrolled in the Graduate School of American Studies may take courses offered at other graduate schools within Doshisha University, at graduate schools in foreign countries, and/or at other graduate schools in Japan which have “agreements” with Doshisha University to grant credits on a mutual basis.

A student admitted to the Graduate School of American Studies may be allowed to transfer credits taken at other graduate schools prior to admission into the Doshisha’s Graduate School of American Studies Master’s program, if the Graduate School of American Studies faculty considers such course work to be educationally relevant. The maximum number of credits from another program that can be counted in the Graduate School of American Studies Master’s program is 10 credits.

1. Courses of Other Graduate Schools in Doshisha University

A student enrolled in the Graduate School of American Studies may take only those courses marked "Yes" (ka) in the course listing of "Daigakuin rishu yoko". S/He should obtain permission from the faculty member offering such course. The list of courses in the other graduate schools of Doshisha University is available at the Office of the Graduate School of American Studies.

2. Courses Taken at Graduate Schools in Foreign Countries

A student enrolled in the Graduate School of American Studies may study at a graduate school in a foreign country for 1 year or longer, provided that the Graduate School of American Studies considers it educationally useful, and the President of the University approves. In this case, such a student remains as a regular student at the Graduate School of American Studies, without a “Leave of Absence,” and this time period of foreign study is counted as part of the length of enrollment at the Graduate School of American Studies. Upon request, s/he may count credits taken abroad into the credits required for completion of his/her Master's Program.

Doshisha University has various exchange programs with colleges and universities of foreign countries as “scholarship student overseas”("gaikoku ryugaku shogakusei") and “exchange student overseas” ("gaikoku kyotei daigaku kokan ryugakusei"). The Graduate School of American Studies has its own exchange program with Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, U.S.A. For details, students should consult with the International Center at Keimei-kan Building, Second Floor.

3. Graduate Courses at Other Universities

Doshisha University has agreements with Ritsumeikan University, Kansai University and Kwansei Gakuin University to offer graduate courses with credits mutually to those enrolled in these four universities. Students who wish to benefit from this credit agreement should read "Kansai 4 daigaku daigakuin gakusei no tan'i gokan ni kansuru kyoteisho". A list of courses offered at those universities is available at the Office of the Graduate School of American Studies.

Students wishing to take courses at these universities should fill out the application form ("Kansai 4 daigaku tan'i gokan rishusei gansho") available at the Office of the Graduate School of American Studies and submit the form, along with 2 photos (3 cm x 2.4 cm), at the time of registration of the Graduate School of American Studies.

UNDERGRASDUATE COURSES

A student in the Graduate School of American Studies can take any undergraduate course at Doshisha University when his/her adviser considers it necessary. Undergraduate courses, however, cannot be counted into the credits for completion of the Master's Degree at the Graduate School of American Studies.

LICENSES

The Master's program of the Graduate School of American Studies offers courses required for the teaching license in "Social Studies" (shakai) for the junior high school level, and in "Civic Studies" (komin) for the senior high school level. Those who wish to take courses for such a license should read the brochure (menkyo shikaku kankei rishu yoko), and register for courses after consultation with the Academic Affairs Section (kyomu-ka menkyo shikaku kakari) at Kofu-kan Building. Orientation for those graduate students seeking teaching licenses will be held on April 4, 2007 (Wednesday), 16:00-18:30, at Kofu-kan Building, Room No. 41.

LENGTH OF ENROLLMENT

A student cannot enroll for more than 4 years in the Master's Program, and 6 years in the Doctoral Program. When a student does not complete the degree within that time, s/he must leave the program (taigaku) or s/he will not be allowed to keep his/her student status (joseki).

A “Leave of Absence” is not counted as enrollment. A “Leave of Absence” may not be more than 2 years in total for students in the Master's Program, and 3 years in total for students in the Doctoral Program. Those who wish to continue research further should read "Daigakuin rishu yoran," particularly sections on "Daigakuin kensyusei ni kansuru naiki" or "Daigakuin kenkyusei ni kansuru naiki".
